How to Achieve the Golden Globe Hairstyle's!

This year on the carpet there were a lot of loosely pulled back up-do's. They are meant to look soft and effortless, while still looking elegant and chic. Here are some tips on how to get that effortless hollywood hairstyle! (Tips derived from Vogue.co.uk's Ian Carmicheal along with my own)

Amy Adams

Get the look by parting hair on the side and blow-drying the hair smooth and using large heated rollers or large-barrel curling iron to add wave and movement. Loosely pull the hair back and twist the hair into a low bun, securing with grips, taking care to leave loose sections at the front to frame the face and add softness. Finish with a medium hold hairspray so as to not lose movement. Remember the curls are supposed to be loose, so don't pull the curls in too tight!

Angelina Jolie

Get this look by parting hair on the side, and blow-dry hair with a large barrel brush and fasten large rollers on random sections to create loose, flowing waves (mostly in frontal sections). Use large barrel brush to flip bangs up and away from face, giving a slightly feathered bang. Finish with a medium hold hairspray.

Eva Longoria
Once again, part the hair on the side and blow-dry smooth. Tease the crown of the hair to create lift at the top, and pull hair back into a french twist or bun (your choice!). Ensure the bangs and sides are smoothly combed, but use a pick comb to slightly dishevel the crown to add a modern twist. Finish with a high hold hairspray to ensure maximum hold.

January Jones

Get January's look by applying volumising mousse to damp hair for added lift, and after parting hair to the side, blow-dry hair in sections with a large barrelled brush, curling the ends under as you go. For more effective curls, use large rollers to curl in the ends and brush out when dry. Finish with a shine serum for a super-glossy effect.

Lea Michelle

Get this look by doing an extreme side-part, and using a small curling iron throughout dry hair to add slight movement and softly backcomb the hair from the back of the ears. Tease into place at the back, and gather into a pleat or bun, leaving sections at the front to hang free. The key to this effortless 'do is keeping it unstructured and relaxed. Finish with medium hold hairspray.

Milla Jovovich

Get the look yourself using heated rollers to create volume, before brushing through with a round barrel brush and pinning the hair to one side (parting hair on opposite side with extreme side-part). Tease the hair into large waves with your fingers and fix with strong-hold hairspray.

Mila Kunis

Tip dry hair upside down and spray with a root-lifting product then backcomb from the front to the crown to create height and volume. Fasten into a pouf with pins, allowing the finish to remain rough and textured. Twist into a bun or french twist. Finish with stong-hold hairspray.

Golden Globes 2011- 10 Best Dressed Women

So as we all know, the golden globes took place earlier this week- and the fashions were amazing. The Golden Globes never seem to disappoint, as many pull out all the stops with beautiful gowns, gorgeous coifs and elegant make-up. There were many trends among the stars this year:

For men: A classic bow-tie was overwhelmingly popular, along with the classic black tux.

For Women:
Surprising Colour: Emerald green was a surprisingly popular colour this year sported by Angelina Jolie, Mila Kunis, Elizabeth Moss, and Catherine Zeta Jones. I'm personally not a huge green fan, but honestly these women pulled it off beautifully.

The Colour to Wear: The dusty roses and baby pinks were by far the winners for most popular gown colour this year at the Globes. Stars such as Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, Sandra Bullock, Lea Michelle, Diana Argon, Megan Fox, and Maria Menounos were just to name a few who wore the popular colour. The dusty rose is great because it can accent almost any skin-tone beautifully- I approve.

The Hair: The hair this year was very old hollywood chic with loosely pulled back coifs, french twists, and pin-curl type locks. (If you love this look but need help achieving, look for my next post on how-to's for old hollywood hair with a twist!).

The Make-up: It's safe to say that the make-up this year was not bold at all- except for the lips. Bold, red lips were very apparent on the carpet this year. Skin tones were very fair, with faintly rosy cheeks and elongated eyes. Simple-looking make-up was key on the carpet.

Here are the top 10 best dressed women from the carpet!

Olivia Wilde in Marchesa
This brown sequinned strapless princess dress is by far the winner in my eyes.

January Jones in Versace
This red fringed cut-out dress with a plunging neckline is incredibly sexy on January. I loved when she walked her legs would show through the fringe skirt (unfortunately this isn't seen in photograph).

Anne Hathaway in Armani Privé
This backless, form fitting Armani looked gorgeous on Anne. The squared sequins that make up the dress made her sparkle, and the puffed shoulders added an extra edge.

Lea Michelle in Oscar de la Renta
Okay so the colour is kind of pepto bismol-esque... but the construction of the dress is just to die for! Plus, Lea definitely pulls off the colour completely!

Mila Kunis in Vera Wang
This one-shouldered, emerald green Vera Wang has SO much texture happening. It looks as though it is wrapped around Mila's body in several different ways to fit her with perfection. And did I mention the gorgeously draped train? Love.

Kailey Cuoco in Catherine Kid
This beautiful strapless nude dress is so pretty with its tiered skirt with asymmetrical lines and slight train. "The Big Bang Theory" star looks like a modern day princess!

Amy Adams in Marchesa
This navy, fitted to the knee, strapless gown is so beautiful with Amy's red locks. The ruffled lace bodice adds character, and the silky looking skirt and train portray such elegance.

 Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang
This form fitting, scoop necked strapless number accents all of Sofia's best ASS-ets. The corset in the back (unseen in photo) puts everything in the right place, and again the very popular train is shown as well.

Julie Bowen in Tadashi Shoji
This dress is very reminiscent of the recent Marchesa collection pieces with the beautiful feather-like ruffles at the shoulder and trailing down to the train.

Scarlett Johansson in Elie Saab
This dusty-rose butterfly sleeved dress so elegant on Scarlett. The sheer looking, flowy dress with exposed back is so gorgeous with great beadwork and floral accents.

7 Ways to Wear a Scarf

I'm not sure about all of you, but I've been under the weather all week and it's probably largely because I am underdressed walking around in the cold winter air. This video was shown to me by a friend, and I think it's great! The girls show 7 different ways to tie a scarf to suit your style and to help you stay warm this winter! After the video I have also featured several different styles of scarves and where to get them! Enjoy!

Circle Scarf- American Apparel in "Cream"
Price: $34.00
This scarf comes in 46 colours! It is somewhat similar to the circle scarf shown in the video, and there are even more ways to wear it (all are shown on the AA website with different pictures and videos). This piece is a must.

Hooded Scarf- French Connection in black/white pattern
Price: $29.99 (On Sale from $48.00)
This Scarf is great for winter time with its large hood and scarf to keep you nice and warm. It is made completely of acrylic, and the pattern is different but not too loud- so you can wear it with almost anything!

Ruffled Edge Scarf- ModCloth in Plum
Price: $34.99
I have a very similarly styled scarf in black from H&M. I love the ruffled edges, because no matter which way you wrap it, it looks so elegant and effortless. I love simply wrapping it loosely around my neck several times, but with that much fabric there are so many variations to work with!

Fringed Shawl/ Scarf- ModCloth in Mocha
Price: $39.99
This fringed scarf is perfect, because not only can you use it as a scarf, but you can use it as a shawl as well (and it looks great with a skinny belt at the waist!). Unfortunately this garment was so popular it is currently sold out on ModCloth, but if you can find a similar style, that's all you need! ModCloth frequently brings popular items back as well, so keep your eye out.

Let me know what you think of these "how to" posts. I think they are great for giving people new ideas on how to wear certain items, or even how to do certain hair/ make-up tricks. I am thinking of doing a few of my own "how-to" instructional videos. I aim to please, so let me know what you want to see!

People's Choice Awards 2011: Best and Worst Dressed Men and Women!

The very first award show to kick off 2011 aired last night- the People's Choice Awards 2011. Of course, it was a star studded event with the Twilight cast, Katy Perry, Vanessa Williams, and the like. Although, one major nominee and fashion icon- Lady Gaga- was not in attendance. So although there wasn't the incredible wow factor that you get from a huge star like Gaga, there were still some sharp looking men and women (as well as some who really should have put more thought into dressing themselves).
The following are the best and worst dressed men and women from the blue (not red) carpet last night!

Best Dressed Women:

Kourtney, Khloe, and Kim Kardashian
The Kardashians looked great together last night! Of course, all of their dresses accented the "girls" with their sweetheart necklines, but I absolutely love the draping of Khloe's dress (center). Both Kourtney and Kim decided to go with a neutral coloured shoe so as to not take attention away from the gorgeous look at me patterns on their dresses.

Selina Gomez Blue Carpet
Selina Gomez Performance Gown

Selena Gomez appeared on the red carpet in a dusty rose cocktail dress (pictured right) in matching coloured peep toe-ed heels. For her performance she wore this gorgeous, flowing sweetheart neckline dress showing off her gorgeous legs, paired with beautiful golden strappy sandals. Hard to believe she's only 18!

Taylor Swift Blue Carpet

Taylor Swift was another gorgeous starlet, in a dusty peach coloured coloured cocktail dress with her seemingly one shouldered, flowy cocktail dress. T-swift also went with matching peep-toe strappy sandals, although decided to make her lips pop with a bold, deep red.

Tiffany Hines Blue Carpet

Tiffany Hines, co-star on the new Canadian show Nikita, was sporting a beautiful royal blue dress with solid black fringing at the base of the dress, as well as black fringing on the exaggerated shoulder. The exposed look of the black boning is edgy, as well as the many accents added to the body of the mini. She very wisely chose to wear a simple black pump, so as to not distract from the dress.

Ashley Benson arriving

Ashley Benson, star of new show Pretty Little Liars arrived on the blue carpet looking very "hollywood chic" (the theme of the awards). Her one-shoulder dress with simple black and white shades and clean cut, a-symmetrical lines and a bold lip/ nails were gorgeous. Her pulled back mane (which looks effortless!) was very common among the starlets last night.

Alyson Michalka, Ashley Tisdale

Alyson Michalka and Ashley Tisdale are the stars of the new show Hellcats.  I love their loose coifs pulled back and slightly curled. Tisdale's maxi dress has gorgeous colours and accents her tanned skin well. Michalka's sixties style simple black dress paired with a gorgeous silver and black shrug makes her look very mature.

Best Dressed Men:
Chris Colfer, Blue Carpet

This Glee star is known on the show as having a great flair for style, and his real-life personality draws the same parallel. His black vest with asymmetrical zippers paired with his dress shirt rolled to the eblows looks edgy and chic. Love his style.

Jerry O'Connel, Blue Carpet

Jerry O'Connell, star of the new show The Defenders, looks great in his classic style matte slate grey suit. His hair is tousled effortlessly, and looks like a picturesque hollywood chic man.

Zac Effron, Award Show

Zac Effron looks stunning in this 3-piece suit with a slight sheen to it. His navy tie creates a slight pop of colour, and his new buzz cut shows off his great facial features. Just sharp.

Worst Dressed Men and Women:

Raven Symone, Blue Carpet

Just no. This is like Black Swan gone wrong (movie, not racial profiling here people). That Jacket is terrible. So unflattering... paired with leather pants and slicked back ponytail? I can't even talk about this anymore. This is why she has dropped to the D-list.

Kid Rock, Performing

Oh no, Kid Rock. Seriously, a furry cowboy hat? Paired with a fur and suede vest? And a Silver stitched navy shirt? And acid washed jeans? He was never really a fashion icon, I guess, but I feel like he has enough money to hire a good stylist... right?! At least he put on a good performance.

Pauly Perette, Blue Carpet

Dear Ms. Perette, why would you take a perfectly good dress and stamp your campaign for "No Hate" on it. Sure, I get the cause... but use your voice. Not your dress. And PLEASE get a new hair cut. Not to mention that if you are so pale you are turning blue, don't wear a white satin dress. It isn't helping anyone.

Who knows.

So guess what this guy's job is. To talk about style at the PCA's last night. Who hired this guy? They should be fired. First of all... hot pink and black? No. White Sungasses on men is a no to begin with... and wearing them on your head... while televised... at night... with a scull scarf??? This no-name might get himself a name by just looking like a sheer idiot.

Vanessa Williams

You look like you are wearing a garbage bag tied at the waist. That is all.

So that about wraps up the fashion at the 2011 People's choice awards for this year. I apologize if I offended you by showing the world your favourite star can't dress themselves properly... but let's be serious. They make enough money to hire a good stylist. Happy New Year!

Unfortunately...

I knew that taking on the task of finding men with great style in Ottawa would be difficult, but I at least thought I would find some men with great style. I'm not talking about just having the ability to coordinate a shirt and jeans properly... I'm talking about men that stand out because of their ability to be different and appreciate proper layering, nice shoes, clothes that fit, and clothes that aren't something everyone else in the city has. It's like everyone who is a fan of Abercrombie and Fitch, American Eagle, and even the unfortunate print-"artist" Ed Hardy all live in Ottawa. If I had to be in another room surrounded by the same plaid and checkered shirts, I might have a seizure. Anyways, the point is that finding men in Ottawa with great style proved to be unsuccessful, and instead I will be focusing on the men in Montreal. It will have much better content, I promise. Plus, I actually have a camera now (thanks Mom), so the photos will be much better quality.

I would also like to take this opportunity get you all to send me photos of men with great style in your area! Obviously I will chose the ones I find to be the best, but I want to see what different areas have to offer.
You can e-mail me at christelle.nicole@hotmail.com with the subject "Well dressed men" (So I know it's not spam!). Look forward to seeing what you've got! If possible, please state information such as the city you are in, and the brands the men are wearing.
